Welcome to the University of Toronto Postgraduate Medical Education (PGME) Electives Online System.

As a postgraduate medical learner, you may apply for an elective rotation at the University of Toronto (U of T) to support your clinical training.

If your home institution has an Inter-Institution Affiliation Agreement (IIAA) with U of T, you may also apply to be eligible to complete required training through that agreement. IIAAs are formal arrangements between U of T and other medical schools to support the Royal College of Physicians and Surgeons of Canada (RCPSC) rotations.

Application Submission Timelines:

  1. For Canadian Citizens or Permanent Residents of Canada enrolled in a Residency or Clinical Fellowship (within Canada):
    • Applications to the PGME Electives Online System must be initiated at least 3 months (90 days) before the start date of your elective.
  2. For Canadian Citizens or Permanent Residents of Canada enrolled in a Residency or Clinical Fellowship Training (Outside of Canada):
    • Applications to the PGME Electives Online System must be initiated at least 3-6 months (90-180 days) before the start date of your elective.

Elective Administration Processing Fee

  • All electives will be subject to a $100 CND processing fee per academic year

To Begin the Application Process:

  1. Ensure you have obtained pre-approval from:
    • your home school program director
    • elective supervisor
    • The University of Toronto program director.
  2. Click 'CREATE ACCOUNT' to begin (Please review the elective approval requirements and ensure your elective start date is at least 3 months (90 days) away from the date of application)
  3. Once logged in, click 'ADD ELECTIVE'
    • Enter elective details (You will only be able to select a start date that is at least 3 months (90 days) in the future).
    • Upload required documents – See Requirements Tab for required documents
    • Submit your application for final PGME approval.

Important:

The PGME Elective System is not a request or holding system. All electives must be pre-arranged with the appropriate program before applying. The system is used only for the formal approval of submitted applications.

International Learners:

If you are an international postgraduate medical learner who holds or requires a valid Ontario work permit, please note that this system is not intended for international medical learner elective applications.
